Valerii Sumilov's Innovative Wine Label Design: Botella de Vino

Award-Winning Design Combines Traditional Spanish Aesthetics with Modern Printing Techniques

Valerii Sumilov's Botella de Vino, a series of Spanish wines, showcases a unique blend of traditional aesthetics and modern printing techniques. The design, which won the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2014, is a testament to Sumilov's innovative approach to packaging design.

The inspiration for Botella de Vino came from the challenge of communicating a complex idea through a minimal set of expressive elements. Sumilov was tasked with creating a design that was not only expressive but also communicated the idea behind the trademark: a bottle of wine. The result is a label that depicts a bottle, the contours of which are made up of various fonts that correspond to the concept of Spanish.

The label's design stands out for its use of advanced printing techniques. The printing was done on quality artistic paper RAFLATAC, with additional techniques including the use of tactile (volume) varnish. A unique accent in the label’s design was created through the use of blind 3D stamping, which formed a bottle cap and all the writing embedded into it.

The label's dimensions are 90 mm wide and 110 mm high. Despite its seemingly simple and temperate design and limited color scheme, the creation of this label was a complex task. It required a careful balance between respecting the stylistic approach common to Spanish wines and expressing the trademark's idea in an original and effective manner.

The design of Botella de Vino was a collaborative effort, with contributions from SHUMI LOVE DESIGN (TM), IMPAKS printing house in Riga, Latvia, and Satir Club wine company in Moscow, Russia. The wine is currently available for purchase in a supermarket chain in Moscow.

The name of the product - Botella de Vino - is embodied on four different levels. It's the product itself, the name of the product, the stylized image of a wine bottle on the label, and the use of writings spelling "botella de vino" that form the bottle shape. This visual recursion ensures that no matter how close or far buyers are from the product, they are always looking at a "wine bottle".

Botella de Vino is a testament to Sumilov's innovative approach to design. It showcases his ability to combine traditional aesthetics with modern printing techniques to create a product that is not only visually appealing but also communicates a complex idea in a simple and effective manner. The design's success is reflected in its receipt of the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2014, a prestigious accolade that recognizes outstanding and trendsetting creations.
